Ice climbing

With an IVBV mountain guide

Ice climbing is a unique sport that involves climbing frozen surfaces, such as icefalls, ice walls, and even steep mountainsides covered in ice. It requires not only physical strength and endurance, but also precision, experience, and appropriate technical preparation.

Specialized tools are characteristic of ice climbing: crampons (spikes worn on shoes) and an ice axe (a tool with a sharp tip driven into the ice), which allow you to conquer ice walls. For this reason, equipment and technique are key - every swing of the crampon and every drive of the crampon requires sensitivity and precision.

Ice climbing is also known for its dynamic environment – the ice is constantly changing due to temperature and weather conditions. Each route can look different every day, which requires the climber to react quickly and adapt to new conditions.

It is a sport that attracts lovers of adventure, nature and challenges, offering unforgettable experiences and the opportunity to come face to face with the winter elements!

Variability of conditions

Precise technique

Ice climbing requires the use of advanced equipment, primarily crampons and ice axes. Crampons are spikes mounted on the soles of shoes that dig into the ice, providing stability and grip even on vertical walls. In turn, ice axes, which have curved blades and contoured handles, are used to dig into the ice and allow for climbing higher. With the right technique for using these tools, a climber can confidently support themselves on ice that would normally be too slippery to climb.

Ice climbing takes place in a very variable environment. Ice is a material that reacts to temperature fluctuations, wind, and sunlight. All these factors affect its structure - it can become brittle and crack easily or, on the contrary, smooth and extremely hard. Each day of climbing can bring different conditions on the same route, which requires not only skill from the climber, but also the ability to adapt and sense when the ice is safe to climb.

Ice climbing requires special precision and technique. Each time you drive your ice axe or crampons into the ice, they must be carefully considered and performed with the right amount of force – a strike that is too strong can cause the ice to crack, while a strike that is too weak will not provide a stable footing. Therefore, precision is key here – the climber must assess where to drive their crampons or ice axe in order to ensure maximum stability and safety on the wall.
